Ladder Game

Ghost leg (Amidakuji) to pair people with results. Your text never leaves your browser.

How to play

  1. Enter the players and the results — prizes, chores, teams or anything else — then press "Build the ladder".
  2. Tap a name at the top. Its path is drawn down the ladder, crossing over at every rung, and the result it lands on is revealed.
  3. Press "Reveal all results" to see everyone's outcome at once.

Why everyone gets exactly one result

A rung simply swaps the two players on either side of it, so two paths can never end in the same place. That is why every player is matched with exactly one result. The rungs are placed with a cryptographic random generator each time you build a new ladder, so nobody can predict the outcome in advance.

A ladder is not perfectly uniform, though: with a limited number of rungs, a player is a little more likely to land near their starting column than far away. If every outcome must have exactly the same odds — a prize draw, for example — use the Random Name Picker instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ladder game?

It is a lottery drawn as a ladder, known as Amidakuji in Japan, ghost leg in Hong Kong and sadari-tagi in Korea. Each player starts at the top of a vertical line and follows it down, crossing over every time a horizontal rung appears, until they land on a result at the bottom.

How many players can join?

From 2 to 12. For larger groups, the Random Name Picker is quicker.

What if I enter fewer results than players?

Missing results are filled with "Nothing", and extra results beyond the number of players are ignored. Leave results empty to get positions 1, 2, 3 and so on.
