Random Team Generator

Split names into fair random teams or groups. Your text never leaves your browser.

How to split a group into teams

  1. Paste the names, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Pick "By number of teams" to say how many teams you want, or "By people per team" to set the team size.
  3. Press "Make teams". The list is shuffled and dealt out one person at a time. Copy the result into chat or a document.

Why the split is fair

The whole list is shuffled once, then people are dealt to Team 1, Team 2, Team 3 and so on in turn. That keeps every team within one person of the others, and who lands where is decided by the shuffle. A name typed twice counts as two people, so add an initial to tell two people with the same name apart.

Frequently asked questions

Can the teams have different sizes?

Only when the numbers do not divide evenly, and then by at most one person. Splitting 10 people into 3 teams gives 4, 3 and 3, with the extra people going to the first teams.

What happens if I choose people per team?

The tool rounds the number of teams up (people ÷ team size) and then splits evenly. 10 people at 4 per team makes 3 teams of 4, 3 and 3, so the last team is never left with a single person.

Is the result random every time?

Yes. Each press reshuffles the list with your browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues). If fairness matters, press once and stick with the result.

Are the names stored anywhere?

No. Names are processed in your browser only and never sent to a server or saved.
