This article uses Korean text as its basis. YouTube titles are said to allow 100 characters and descriptions 5,000, but the official help page adds “English basis”, so it is easy to wonder how many Korean characters fit. Below we separate what the help pages actually say from what they do not say, and show how to measure title drafts with Geuljasu’s calculation function.
What the official help pages say
YouTube Help “Upload videos” (checked 2026-10-27) says a video title is limited to 100 characters (English basis), a description to 5,000 characters (English basis), and that invalid characters are not allowed. “Add video descriptions” says up to 5,000 characters are allowed in a description.
| Item | Value confirmed in the official wording | Not stated in the official pages |
|---|---|---|
| Title | 100 characters (English basis) | How one Korean character is counted |
| Description | 5,000 characters (English basis) | How emoji and special characters are counted |
Neither page explains Korean-specific counting or emoji handling. So we do not claim that “Korean counts as 1”; we show values counted per character and ask you to confirm in the YouTube Studio input box. Policies can change, so the check date is recorded.
Counted per character, titles look like this
These values were counted per character, spaces included, with Geuljasu’s calculation function. The Korean examples are kept as written (meaning in parentheses).
| Input | Characters | Remaining against 100 |
|---|---|---|
| 100 of “가” | 100 | 0 (exact) |
| 101 of “가” | 101 | -1 (over) |
| 100 of Latin “a” | 100 | 0 |
| ”초보 직장인을 위한 엑셀 함수 10가지 | 퇴근 시간 줄이는 실전 정리 #엑셀 #직장인” (10 Excel functions for new office workers) | 48 | 52 |
| ”[4K] 제주도 3박 4일 브이로그 | 렌터카·맛집·숙소 총정리” (Jeju 4-day vlog) | 35 | 65 |
Be careful with emoji
An emoji looks like one character but can be made of several codes inside. Ten family emoji count as 10 by visible character in Geuljasu’s function, but as 80 by programming-language string length (UTF-16). The official pages do not say which way YouTube counts, so check a title with many emoji in Studio.

FAQ
Do I have to fill the title to 100? No. 100 is only the maximum. Put the key words first and keep it readable at a glance.
What if the description goes over 5,000? The help page only says up to 5,000 characters are allowed, so shorten or split it within 5,000.
Can a Korean title also be 100? The official wording is “English basis”, so a Korean basis is not stated. Fit it within 100 per character, then confirm in Studio.
To trim the part that goes over, choose “YouTube title · 100” in the Character Limit Trimmer. To see counts with and without spaces together, use the Word Counter.
